Parish priest in Wszechświęte. Co-heir of Grocholice in the Opatów district (Sandomierz Voivodeship) was the son of Piotr (+ around 1458) and grandson of Jan Zaklika, starosta of Sącz in 1404, deputy judge of Kraków land in 1418, and came from the Syrokomla family. His grandfather, Jan Zaklika, was a first cousin of Jakub from Korzkiew (sometimes called Jakub from Kurdwanów), initially a parish priest in Biały Kościół (heritage of the Syrokomla family), and later the bishop of Płock (+1425). Frequently mentioned in records from 1426, mostly along with his brother Andrzej, called “Długosz,” while Jakób himself and his other brother Piotr are referred to as “Wielgachy.” In 1434, he was the scribe of Sandomierz lands; in 1446, a proxy of Bishop Zbigniew Oleśnicki; in 1450, a canon of Sandomierz and Kielce; in 1451, a canon of Kraków and parish priest in inherited Wszechświęte (Grocholice) by presentation of the Kraków chapter.
The Syrokomla family in Grocholice were deprived of patronage over the local church because one of them murdered the local parish priest (Długosz). Jakób Grocholski in 1455 testified during the establishment of the miracles of Blessed Prandota. In 1460, along with his brother Andrzej, he built a stone church in Wszechświęte on the site of the former wooden one; this church exists to this day with “Syrokomla” coats of arms and a foundation plaque:
A former collaborator of Oleśnicki, Jakob Gr. took a bold stance during the struggle for the Kraków bishopric throne: when, after the death of Bishop Tomasz Strzepiński in 1461, Pope Pius II appointed his successor, steadfast in loyalty to the Holy See, Jakob of Sienna, a nephew of the late Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki, and King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk, wishing to appoint the compliant Jan Gruszczyński, Bishop of Kuyavia, sentenced the papal nominee to exile and threatened his supporters with confiscation of property and even death, Gr., holding the castle of the bishops in Iłża on behalf of the deceased Bishop Tomasz, stood, obedient to the pope, on the side of Jakob of Sienna and refused to hand over the castle to the royal nominee’s envoys. By the king’s order, he was forcibly removed from Iłża, the castle entrusted to Jan Woyszyk, the Kraków custodian, who then handed it over to Gruszczyński’s proxies. With this bold behavior, Gr. demonstrated that, alongside Jan Długosz, he was one of the few Kraków canons who understood the true duty of a Catholic priest. The date of death of Jakob Grocholski is unknown. He is buried under the church he built. His younger brother, Andrzej “Długosz,” left behind five sons: Stanisław, married to Katarzyna Szydłowiecka, castellan of Żarnów, continues the main line of the Syrokomla family of Grocholice and Grabów Grocholscy.
