A Brief Remembrance of Stanisław Grocholski, Son of Zdzisław

On February 8, 2002, Stanisław Bohdan Count Grocholski passed away at Chateau de Valduc in Belgium – the senior of the family, journalist, publicist, social and political activist.

He was born on November 4, 1912, in Pietniczany in Podolia, as the son of Zdzisław and Maria from the Sołtan family. He graduated from the College of Marian Fathers in Bielany, Warsaw, as well as the Faculty of Law at the University of Warsaw and the School of Political Sciences (1938). He worked at the Consulate General in Marseille (1938-1940). From 1941-1945, he was a special officer on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief. He edited “Dziennik Polski” and “Dziennik Żołnierza” (international affairs, London 1959 – 1979), “Życie” (1969 – 1972), Biuletyn Międzypolonijny (1975 – 1978), and was a Trustee of the Veritatis Foundation (chairman 1979 – 1989).

He belonged to, among others, the Catholic Council for Polish Welfare, Pax Romana, Anglo-Polish Society, Polish Independence Movement “Independence and Democracy”, Polish Federalists’ Union in London, Education Committee for Poles in Great Britain, Union Europeenne des Federalistes in France and Belgium, Polish Section “Paix et Liberte”, North American Study of Polish Affairs, Information Centre for Polish Affairs and European Liaison Group in London, and the Polish Council of the European Movement. Additionally, he was a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and a Member of the Advisory Committee for European Integration at the Prime Minister of Poland.

He was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of “Polonia Restituta”, the Cross of Valour, and the Cross “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice”.
